When to Make Updates to Your New Home
Make a list.
Whenever someone closes on a new home, they inevitably have things they want to change or fix in their new place. I recommend that all of my clients make a list of 5-6 things they want to change or fix when they first get into their new home and rank them on importance. They can be small things like touching up some paint or adding some furniture, or, they can be bigger more expensive things like new cabinets, new appliances, or changing the layout of the home.
Live in your home.
After this list is created, I advise they wait a few months before making any of the big changes. This is so that they can get a feel for how they live in the house and what issues become a top priority. They’ll usually find after living in the house for a short period of time, some changes to their home become smaller issues than they expected and some become larger. When they look back on the list they see that some of the changes aren’t as noticeable and that some are a big priority to get changed throughout the home. Once you’ve got a good grasp on the issues, rework your list and prioritize.
Make your changes.
With a properly prioritized list, you can make your changes to save money in the long term and increase your overall happiness in the home. You’ve just made a big purchase on your property so having the ability to put off a few big expenses you thought you’d need to take on can be a big help as you move and settle in. It will also allow you to get comfortable in your space and make better decisions down the line knowing what you now need in your home.
